Green Steps

What is the Green Steps Program?
It's simple. It's reducing the negative impact on the environment - one step at a time.

There are two parts to this program. One is what ASR does to make a difference and the other is what you do, the exhibitors and attendees, to make a difference.

What Steps does your company take?

If your company is taking active steps towards a healthy and greener Action Sports industry and taking steps to encourage environmentally friendly products, we would like to hear about it as well as share it with the action sports community.  On www.asrbiz.com, we will list up to five (5) one-sentence bullet points highlighting your program.  To participate, please download and complete the Green Steps Submission Form below.

What Steps does ASR take?
- Offset the energy used to operate ASR by purchasing RECs (renewable energy certificats). This is equivalent to taking approx. 27 cars off the road for an entire year or planting 36 acres of trees.

- Implementation of recycled aisle carpet.

- Offer recycled booth carpet to exhibitors.

- Moved to recycled paper badges printed with soya ink instead of plastic.

- Show bags produced with recycled paper.

- Intensive recycling program at the San Diego convention center. Kitchen food waste is sent to the local compost in Miramar.

- Reduced printing and increase use of electronic communication. For example: online registration, online exhibitor service manuals, e-newsletters and electronic sales kits.

What's new for this year?
- Bio-degradable food and beverage containers and utensils at the convention center.

- Carbon Neutral Traveler Program:
Traveling to San Diego? Offset your carbon imprint with the ASR Carbon Neutral Travel Program! Click here to get started.

As a business, you may already be taking steps that lessen your environmental impacts and reduce your energy and material needs, waste and carbon emissions.  Small steps by many across an entire industry are one way to see noticeable gains in reducing CO2 over the long run.  The Carbon Neutral Traveler Program is a way to offset the CO2 emissions by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (REC), which provides a way for businesses to take steps toward lowering their emissions.

Here's how it works, traveling to, from, and during ASR produces carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.   Carbon offsets allow you to ensure that in the future, clean alternative wind energy is produced in lieu of carbon intensive coal fired energy.  The goal for this program is to encourage, step by step, the spread of ecologically sound best practices throughout our industry. You are offsetting the carbon that you have already emitted, reducing future carbon emissions, and helping to grow the availability of clean energy by supporting new wind energy projects.

What's in the future?

- Alternative transportation vs. the standard hotel shuttle program. Pending bio-diesel availability.

- Composting bio-degradable items and reuse for local fertilizer. Pending further research and city participation.

- The San Diego Convention Center is looking to add solar panels to produce a significant amount of their energy.

The 11th Hour

As one of the most celebrated names in the action sports industry and founder and CEO of Sole Technology, parent company of etnies, etnies girl, eS, Emerica, Altamont and ThirtyTwo, Pierre Andre Senizergues has teamed up with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tree Media as Executive Producer for THE 11th HOUR in hopes to create awareness around the environmental issues we are currently facing.  Opening officially in theaters this August, the 11th HOUR describes the last moment when change is possible. The film explores how humanity has arrived at this moment - how we live, how we impact the Earth's ecosystems, and what we can do to change our course.   The film features dialogues with experts from all over the world, in addition to over 50 leading scientists, thinkers and leaders who present the facts and discuss the most important issues that face our planet.

The 11th HOUR is produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Leila Conners Peterson and Nadia Conners.

Over the past four years, the Corporation has garnered a half-dozen state and city awards for our highly successful conservation and recycling efforts.
Because conservation of energy and natural resources is a top priority, the SDCCC has developed several programs promoting minimal use of materials and natural resources that adversely impact the environment. This SDCCC fact sheet outlines the green programs and practices currently in place at the Convention Center.  We invite clients and guests to join in these efforts.
