A VENUE UPGRADE FOR THE FINAL REGIONAL QUALIFIER HAS LAST YEAR'S CHAMPIONS HUNGRY FOR A REPEAT
(Huntington Beach, Calif.) July 10, 2008 - With four of the five 2008 events in the books, only one National Finalist has yet to be crowned, and that will ultimately be decided on July 11, when the Hawaiian teams take to the lineup for The Quiksilver Surf Shop Challenge Hawaiian Regional Qualifier.
This year, the event has been stepped up considerably. A change in venue, from Kewalo Basin to Ala Moana--one of the best and most respected waves on the south shore of Oahu--has provided an upgraded location for the competitors. And with waves scheduled to arrive Thursday night into Friday morning, the 2008 event is expected to be the best Hawaiian Qualifier to date.
Last year's final came down to the wire, as Town and Country edged out Local Motion by less than two points. And as the first team to have an entry form in this year, T&C is hungry for a repeat. Local Motion, however, led by Quiksilver's Bonga Perkins and 15 year old ripper Keanu Asing have finished in second place for the past two years and are ready to make the next step. 2005 National Champions, Pacific Vibrations, made a strong run finishing in third last year while 2006 Hawaiian Champions, Quiksilver Waikiki, rounded out the final in fourth. These two teams have tasted glory in the past and look to hoist the trophy once again.
The winner of Hawaii's Regional Championships will join the other 2008 regional winners on September 8 at the National championships at Huntington Beach Pier in California.

Originally conceived to provide a fun and competitive format for the hardcore surf shop riders, the SURFER Shop Team Challenge was one of the most popular and exciting Southern California contests of the early 1980s. After several years on hiatus, the competition made a wildly successful return four years ago as the 2004 Quiksilver Surf Shop Challenge. Each year the competition level rises, the stakes become greater and the prizes become bigger.
Competitor prizes for 2008 include product from Quiksilver, Vans Shoes, Sector 9, Aviso Surfboards, Komunity Project, and Quiksilver Travel. Regional champions earn a trip to California to fill their spot in the National Championships, as well as VIP passes to the 2008 Surfer Poll and Video Awards. National champs will walk away with a winner-take-all $10,000 prize, a full-page ad in SURFER Magazine, an Aviso carbon fiber surfboard, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii for the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, complements of Quiksilver Travel.
Special thanks goes to: Vans Shoes, Sector 9 Skateboards, Aviso Surfboards, Komunity Project, Quiksilver Travel, ASR, Surf Expo, Board Retailers Association (B.R.A.) and WaveWatch.com.
