RECENTLY retired surfing legend Mark "Occy" Occhilupo will be honoured in a special tribute night as part of the 2008 Surfest celebrations in Newcastle on Saturday 5th April.
After more than 20 years on the elite surfing tour and a 1999 world surfing title, Occy retired at the end of 2007 as one of the sports most universally loved characters. Now residing on the Gold Coast but raised in Kernell, Occy has had one of surfing¹s most celebrated and documented careers.
Bursting onto the international stage as a 16-year-old armed with cheeky grin, a lethal forehand and a formidable backside hook, Occy stormed the surfing world by winning the Beaurepaires Open, The Gunston 500 and defeating Tom Curren to win the OP Pro all in the same year (1985).
